Question by : What are the traditional christmas tree ornaments?
I have read somewhere that there are certain ornaments for a christmas tree that are traditional and each has a meaning. The only one i can remember is a "pickle" and I think it means prosperity. Does anyone have any info on these? Also I think another was a bird of some sort.

It never fails. Every December someone asks about the German Christmas pickle ornament that's supposed to have a long tradition in Germany.

Here's the pickle “legend” from one Web site: “A very old Christmas eve tradition in Germany was to hide a pickle [ornament] deep in the branches of the family Christmas Tree. The parents hung the pickle last after all the other ornaments were in place. In the morning they knew the most observant child would receive an extra gift from St. Nicholas. The first adult who finds the pickle traditionally gets good luck for the whole year.” This Christmas pickle story, with a few minor variations, can be found all over the Web and in print inside the ornament package. It says that Germans hang a pickle-shaped glass ornament on the Christmas tree hidden away so it's difficult to find. The first child to find it on Christmas morning gets a special treat or an extra present.

Of course, anyone familiar with German Christmas customs can see the flaws in this “legend.” First of all, the German St. Nick doesn't show up on Christmas Eve. He arrives on the 5th or 6th of December. Nor do German children open their presents on Christmas morning. That happens on Christmas Eve in Germany

Very cute decoration. Battery operated and the speaker is very clear considering the size of the ornament. Plays the entire song. I’m very happy with my purchase and considering hunting down the other two in the collection.

If Only We Could Get the Truckster from the Original Movie, December 13, 2011

This is a great piece for anyone who is a fan of the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies. Obviously they are concentrating on ornaments from the third film Christmas Vacation since they are primarily going to be hung from the tree as ornaments, but I’d love to see the Truckster from the original Vacation movie with maybe the old dead lady wrapped up on the roof or something. This is a plastic vehicle with a plastic tree attached complete with roots (it’s all one mould). There’s a button in the dirt part of the roots which when you press it plays the Mavis Steeples song Christmas Vacation. Well sort of, it’s only the into and is actually being sung by a guy. Took me a while to work out where the button was (it’s quite well hidden, so a good job done there). It took even longer to work out how to open the thing on the undercarriage to put the two batteries in. The answer is you need to unscrew the screw between the two rear wheels (see my customer image). Mine didn’t come with an instruction booklet or anything, not sure if they usually do, but it does come in a nice little box to protect it when not in use hanging from a tree or on display on a shelf. There is a little circle thing with the lawn ornament Santa and reindeer and word logo from the film on it but you’ll still need to attach a bit of string or whatever to it to hang it from a tree. You’d think it would come with one but good news is it does come with batteries. It takes two of those old small style (and expensive) silver tablet size watch batteries if yours are missing.

Being that it’s just a plastic mould the doors don’t open, wheels don’t rotate or anything like this. It’s only slightly bigger than a standard 1/64 sized Matchbox car (it’s closer to 1:43) so would fit nicely in any die-cast vehicle collectors collection. I collect movie themed die-cast vehicles so that’s what interested me about this one. The fact that it plays a tune is a nice bonus. Don’t know why Hallmark don’t release these outside the USA though.

You can also get Cousin Eddie’s RV which was released a few years ago, however it’s quite pricey due to supply and demand. No other vehicles but you can also get the Griswold house as an ornament too. No doubt this will also reach those price heights. It’s a nice car if you can get for it a reasonable price I wouldn’t hesitate.
